Property owners may purchase and apply certain pesticides for Bed Bug Control on their property. Tenants may also apply Bed Bug Control to their own apartments (with certain exceptions).
However, owners and tenants may not apply these products to common use areas or to the property of another person. A licensed pest control or management operator (exterminator) may perform these tasks more effectively, safely and legally. Great care should be taken not to use products with salt-water diatomaceous earth or heat-treated diatomaceous earth, which can damage the lungs of any mammal (dogs, cats, or humans) which inhale it, and has also been known to cause cancer. Also, if you are going to treat bedbugs yourself, be aware of the dangers associated with the chemicals you are using. Read all labels and instructions very carefully!
If an apartment or room is found to be infested, adjoining rooms and those immediately upstairs and downstairs should be inspected and managed, as appropriate.
Note Before You Conduct Bed Bug Control or Insecticide Usage:
Carefully read the label of the package BEFORE applying any pesticide. Apply the product only if you fully understand the instructions. If you are unsure of the risks involved, and do not have the appropriate training/certification and equipment leave the job for a professional pest controller.
Do NOT apply any insecticide or pesticide to mattresses or to surfaces that would be in direct contact with people, unless the label instructions specifically state that the product can be applied in that manner. Some products can be harmful to humans and pets. You must READ and UNDERSTAND the labels, directions, and dangers associated with the insecticides and chemicals.
